Bike ride along the Cherry Creek.

Western Terrestrial Garter Snake

Velvet ant - Dasymutilla
This is also called a Cow Killer (it’s actually a wingless female wasp) because it’s sting is reputed to be painful enough to kill a cow! (Much thanks and gratitude to Theresa who identified this for us!)
It was very fast and made a distinct hissing noise.

Spider eating a cricket.

Ladybug eggs discovered on an aphid covered Aspen leaf.

They hatched! Tiny, black and stinky larvae.

Gathering aphids for the larvae.

Did all of these ladybugs come from those tiny eggs?
Hundreds of Ladybugs to protect our garden!

The WONDER of a child!

We planted our Sunflower House, July 5, 2004, to coincide with a Beatrix Potter Unit Study by Elizabeth Foss. With Sharon Lovejoy’s Roots, Shoots, Buckets and Boots as our gardening companion and seeds from Nichols Garden Center, we hauled away rocks, dug out turf and planted Kong Hybrid, Sunspot Dwarf, and Joker sunflowers. In the same spirit of Sharon Lovejoy all plants were grown organically.
Here are the results:

- Morning glories winding their way up the sunflower stalk. Anna Botsford Comstock has a great chapter on morning glories in her Handbook of Nature Study.

They opened their bright, cheery blossoms!

Look how much they’ve grown! They are taller than Daddy who is 6′ 5″.

August 8, 2006
83″!!!

Kong Hybrid sunflowers give the yard a tropical feel.

Beautiful blossoms attract beautiful bees. We didn’t get the camera in time but we saw a bee atleast 1 1/2″ long on this blossom. It was black and yellow stripped and very fuzzy.

We can no longer measure with the tape. They’ve grown too tall but we estimate that the talliest grew to 13′. The morning glories didn’t seem to florioush but the moon flowers we planted did well and covered the stalks of the sunflowers.

“Like the sunflower, that follows every movement of the sun, so I turn to you, to follow you, my God.”

A deer’s femur bone found on the trail, July 2004, at the Look Out Mountain Nature Center. The naturalist believed that a coyote had traveled with it because there weren’t any other remains nearby.

Galadreil with a broken femur, in a full leg cast, going on a nature “stroll” with the Homeschooling group.
